Who runs beibook
beibook is made and run by Patrick Paul. Anything on this page can be asked of him directly.
What beibook keeps
- About you: the email address you sign in with, and the name you give. Staff who join a shop by a link or a QR code give a name only.
- About your shop: its name; its products, with their names, units, descriptions, tags, photos and prices; every change of price, with who made it and when; a record of what was added, changed or removed, by whom and when; who is in the team and what each person may do; and the shop's settings.
- To keep you signed in: three small files (cookies) on your phone. One says which signed-in session this is, and lasts 90 days from when you last used the app. One is kept for a few minutes while you wait for a sign-in code. One remembers that this browser has signed in as your address before, and lasts a year. A sign-in code lasts ten minutes, and only a scrambled form of it is kept.
- If you turn notifications on: the address your phone's notification service gave us for that phone, and which kinds of news you chose.
- How often each product is opened: one number per product per day, so a shop can be shown the products it looks at most. Not who looked.
- On your own phone: a copy of your shop's price list, so it opens with no connection, and your choice of language and of light or dark. Signing out removes the copy.
- About each request to our server: what kind it was, when, whether it worked and how long it took. Not what was in it. To stop abuse, requests are counted by the address they come from, and when a caller is refused for asking too often, the address or the account is written down.
What beibook does not keep
No passwords: there are none. No payment details. No location. No contacts from your phone. There is no advertising in beibook and nothing that follows you around the web, and this website counts no visitors.
Who can see your shop
Only the people in your shop's team, and each of them only what the shop's owner allows. Another shop cannot see your products, your prices or your team.
Patrick, as the person who runs beibook, is able to reach the database it is all kept in. He does that to keep beibook working and to put faults right, and for nothing else.
Others who help run it
beibook cannot run without a few other companies. This is each of them, and what reaches them.
- Cloudflare carries everything between your phone and beibook, and stores the shops' photos and the backup of the database.
- Google sends the email with your sign-in code, so it sees your email address and the code.
- Your phone's own notification service (Google's, Apple's or Mozilla's) delivers notifications. What a notification says is locked so that only your phone can read it.
- OpenAI, only if tag suggestions are on for your shop: when a product is added, its name, unit, description and photo are sent, to suggest other words it could be found by. Never a price, and never anything about a person. We ask OpenAI not to keep them. A shop can switch this off in its settings.
- The company whose server beibook runs on.
Nothing is sold to anyone, and nothing is given to anyone to advertise with.
The numbers on this website
The website may show totals across every shop together: how many shops, how many people, how many products, how many prices changed. Never anything about one shop, and not at all until there are enough shops that no number could be one shop's.
How long things are kept
- Your shop's prices and their history: for as long as your shop uses beibook.
- A product you delete stays in the record, marked as deleted, so that its price history and phones that were offline stay correct. A person who is removed from a team keeps their name beside the changes they made.
- Backups reach back seven days. Our server's own notes about requests are kept for about two weeks.
- Nothing is cleared out by itself yet: old sign-in records and deleted products stay until someone asks for them to go.
What you can ask
You can ask to see what beibook holds about you, to have it corrected, or to have your account or your whole shop removed. There is no button for removing an account or a shop yet: write to us and it is done by hand. What was removed leaves the backups within seven days.
If this page changes
The date at the top says when it last changed. If something that matters changes, shop owners are told before it does.
